But in order to do the actual text generations, you need a (paid) OpenAI account so Promptitude and OpenAI can connect.
📌 Important: A paid ChatGPT Plus account is NOT necessary or sufficient to connect Promptitude to OpenAI. A “standard” or free OpenAI account is enough and just recharge your API usage, read more details in this article.

You don't need to be a developer to follow these steps. So, let's get started!
ChatGPT Plus vs. OpenAI API Access
Before we dive into the steps, it's essential to understand the difference between ChatGPT Plus and OpenAI API access.
📌 ChatGPT Plus is a subscription plan that costs $20/month, which provides you with general access to ChatGPT. However, this subscription plan only covers usage on their limited web interface chat.openai.com and does NOT include access to the OpenAI API.
To use the OpenAI API (which Promptitude needs to work), you'll need a separate paid account that covers API usage.
And no worries: API usage is "pay-as-you-go". You only pay for your actual usage, which starts at $0,002 per 1,000 tokens for the fastest chat model.
Setting Up Your Paid OpenAI Account
Ready to set up your OpenAI account to access the API? Follow these simple steps:
1️⃣ Sign up for an OpenAI account
If you've signed up for ChatGPT in the past, log in using the same email address and password at https://platform.openai.com. If you don't have an account yet, follow these steps:
Go to https://platform.openai.com/signup and log in with the email you want.
Fill in your password, tell more about yourself, and click Agree.
Verify your account from your email, and to use the API you will need to add your phone - OpenAI takes security seriously, and this helps protect your account.
2️⃣ Set up your paid account
Once you're successfully logged in at https://platform.openai.com:
Click on the Organization tab.
Select Billing to proceed with setting up your payment options (or directly go to https://platform.openai.com/account/billing/overview).
You'll find a green Add payment details button in the Overview tab.
Choose whether you are adding the card for an Individual or a Company.
Enter your card details carefully and ensure that the card is active and ready for transactions.
OpenAI has changed its model from "pay-as-you-go" to "prepaid". So to activate your API you will need to purchase your initial amount of credits, with at least $5 upwards.
Choose How to Manage Your Account
Managing your API usage and payments can be tailored to fit your needs. OpenAI offers two convenient methods:
🔹 Auto-recharge Your API: This option is perfect if you want a worry-free way to ensure you never run out of credits. Auto-recharge kicks in when your balance falls below a specified threshold:
Set a balance limit in your account settings.
Once your credits dip below this limit, your card will automatically be charged to replenish your credits by a predefined amount.
Auto-recharge is ideal for continuous operations, preventing any interruptions in your API usage.
🔹 Add Credits to Your API: If you prefer more control over when and how much you pay, you can opt to manually add credits to your account:
Navigate to the billing settings in your account.
Enter the amount of credits you wish to purchase and confirm the transaction.
Remember, your credits are consumed based on the number of tokens processed by the API. Each model has different costs per token, so keep track of your usage to manage your credits effectively.

And after you've added all your daily prompts to Promptitude, you can probably cancel your ChatGPT Plus subscription, as managing your prompts with Promptitude is much easier - and fun.
